Society has certain expectations of male and female characteristics which can often seep into the language we use, and how we respond to that language, without us even realising. This linguistic gender-coding can also impact the recruitment process, and research has shown that this unconscious bias can put women off applying for jobs that list traits with masculine-coded language.
